Greg's Other Interests
Greg's Other Interests... Life beyond Amateur Radio
Greg Greenwood WB6FZH
- GOLF- Since I was 10 years old, too much golf in the 60s & 70s.
Some rounds in the 80s & early 90s. Mostly hit practice balls these days...
- WW2 AIRCRAFT- From the Hollywood Air Force of the movies, I
became interested in B-17, B-24, B-25, B-26, Spitfire and others. I collect
some of the radios they carried and have been lucky enough to see many of
the aircraft in person.
- LATIN LANGUAGE- Since High School I have collected text books,
readers, and dictionaries. I plan to re-learn all I have forgotten, and
translate the writings that escaped me years ago.
- ROMAN HISTORY- From the study of Latin, I have developed an interest
in this period of history. I was lucky enough to visit the Roman Forum.
- TROUT FISHING- A life-long interest, usually in the streams and
rivers of N. California's Sierra Mountains. Fly and spin technologies are
used.
- PSYCHO-KINESIS/ESP/PARANORMAL- The power of the mind has always
interested me. Scientific studies and chance events have only served to
increase my interest in this controversial area science and entertainment.
- SPACE TRAVEL/MIR/SHUTTLE/UFO- From the beginning, Space Travel has
interested me. I watch, listen and read what I can. I often wonder what we
really can and have done up there...and are we alone?
- ANTIQUE RADIO- Membership in the Antique Wireless Association and
California Historical Radio Society coupled with books and magazines have
brought the excitement of the equipment and it's users to my mind's eye.
- SHORTWAVE LISTENING- In the pre-CNN years, my shortwave set brought
the news and political propaganda. Within a minute of the Gulf War's first
explosions I was listening to HF SSB traffic from the war-zone. Financial
constraints and satellite technology are resulting in the demise of SW
Broadcasting.
- BUILDING ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT- From my first crystal set in the 4th
grade, to the population of printed circuit boards and construction of 40s,
50s and 60s tube technology gear I is still magic.
- RADIO BOYS BOOKS- I enjoy reading the adventure books of the 1920s
written by Allen Chapman and Gerald Breckenridge. I also have enjoyed the
auto-biographies of radio operators and experimentors.
- MILITARY RADIOS- I enjoy restoring WW2 and other Military Radios.
I often operate these 50-year-old radios in the Amateur Radio Spectrum.
I have operated circa 1944 TCS and ARC-5 radios since the 1960s.
- TRAVEL- With my wife Jeanne it is great to other people and places
that have only been in my imagination or the pages of a book. She and I
like to cruise and dance our way over the waves.(/MM)
