N2YQP, Chris

AO-27 2X QRP QSO to Anchorage Alaska with 1/2 watt

Here is Chris, N2YQP, on September 19th, 1998 during an AO-27 satellite 2X QRP QSO from Albuquerque, New Mexico(DM-65) to Anchorage, Alaska. On the other end was KK5YY/KL7, Jerry Schmitt, who was talking from an "Anchorage Hamfest", with AMSAT and ARRL officials watching as he and Chris exchanged reports with their 1/2 watt uplink signals. As the AO-27 satellite moved South, VE6EGN, Egon Backe, another 1/2 watt station in Carnwood, Alberta and KH6/WB6FZH, Greg, in Kaneohe, Hawaii were also contacted that same pass. Thanks to all stations that helped or stood by.

Chris' 145.85 Mhz uplink transmitter was a Yaesu FT-530 at 1/2 watt and Radio Shack HTX-404 for down link reception on 436.8 Mhz. The beam antenna was the 7 element 70 CM and 3 element 2 mtr ARROW model 146/437-10.

Chris tape records the passes with a microcassette to act as a log and verify callsigns, etc. The prior AO-27 passes that day from Chris' location were worked with Brian Mileshosky, N5ZGT. Thanks to Brian's Dad, Pat Mileshosky for taking this picture of Chris for us to see Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellite activity.

N2YQP has taken Satellite DXpeditions around the country, providing many new grid squares for satellite stations eager to earn awards. His QSLs often have photos of the area the contact took place.
