"Lowfers" 160-190 khz Operators

It works out to about 1875 to 1580 meters...Full of noises, tones, digital garbage and dedicated experimenters trying to see what they can do with their one watt of power. This is a "License Free" band, the limitations are roughly that your antenna & transmission line can not exceed 50' total length. [That is why most all beacons and transmitters are remote keyed from the base of the antenna.]

Some experimenters build simple CW Beacons, others experiment with digital modes (BFSK) or SSB. I hope to get my beacons going soon, I keep trying to devise a modest antenna that will work, but not look like the "Voice of America" antenna farm. A full 50' antenna is out of the question, so a shorter one with a top-hat and loading coil is being devised.

I have been collecting issues of the "Lowdown", a publication of the Longwave Club of America. Contact: Bill Oliver, 45 Wildflower Road, Levittown, PA 19057 (3/98- Membership rates:$18.00[USA]). This little publication contains Commercial Beacon Listings 0-530khz, New and Unidentified Beacons, The 1750 Meter Band (Beacon Listings), Experimental Articles, Listings of "Medfer/BCB" Beacons at the "top end" 1600-1700 khz, Articles on Natural Radio (less than 14khz) and more. There is a section that keeps readers up to date on the various activities experimenter-members that write in with their recent experiments, etc. One of my personal favorites is the "LF Notebook", a Mailbag and commentary column, by John Davis (LWCA Homepage Webmaster).
